Georgia has become one of the most searched destinations for Gulf travellers: green mountains, beautiful cities and relatively short, affordable flights. The question we hear most: start in Tbilisi or Batumi?
Tbilisi: the capital and the mountains
Tbilisi is the best starting point for most visitors – the cobbled Old Town with wooden balconies, the sulphur baths, Narikala Fortress by cable car and the Bridge of Peace. It is also the base for the best day trips:
- Kazbegi (Stepantsminda): a spectacular mountain road and Gergeti church on the hilltop. Best in summer; the road can close for snow in winter.
- Sighnaghi: a small hilltop town overlooking the Alazani Valley.
- Mtskheta: the ancient capital, close enough for half a day.
Batumi: the Black Sea
Batumi is a seaside city for those who want a promenade, the beach and summer nights – with the Botanical Garden and a cable car over the city. Its best season is June to September; the rest of the year it is much quieter and often rainy.
Combining both
Tbilisi and Batumi are far apart. Options: the train (comfortable for families), a short domestic flight, or a car with driver if you want stops on the way. Many travellers fly into one city and out of the other to avoid doubling back.
Best time to visit
- May–June: lush and mild – one of the best periods.
- July–August: peak Gulf season, higher prices, book early.
- September–October: autumn colours, harvest season, better prices.
- Winter: skiing in Gudauri and Bakuriani, cheaper flights.
Practical tips
- Check entry requirements for your nationality before booking.
- The currency is the Georgian lari; cards are widely accepted in cities, but carry cash for villages and markets.
- For mountain trips, agree the price and route with the driver in advance.
